Mountain Construction Specifications
This Santa Cruz Mountains cabin renovation required specialized construction techniques to handle the unique challenges of mountain building. Working at 2,800 feet elevation, our experienced general contractor team addressed steep terrain access, weather exposure, and the region's specific fire safety requirements that are crucial for structures in California's high-risk fire zones.
The roof replacement involved complete tear-off of 1,800 square feet of worn composition shingles and installation of Class A fire-rated architectural shingles with ice and water shield underlayment. We upgraded the ventilation system with ridge vents and soffit vents to address the mountain climate's extreme temperature variations. All materials were helicopter-transported due to narrow access roads and steep terrain typical of Santa Cruz Mountains construction projects.
The new 480 square foot wraparound deck features sustainably sourced redwood decking with galvanized joist hangers and post anchors engineered for the area's seismic requirements. We installed custom railings with tempered glass inserts to preserve views while meeting California's 42-inch height requirements. The deck's elevated design accommodates the sloped lot while providing level outdoor living space.
Exterior painting included specialized preparation for the mountain environment's UV exposure and moisture cycling. We used premium acrylic paint with mildew resistance, essential for structures surrounded by dense forest canopy. The project timeline spanned 8 weeks to accommodate weather windows and material delivery logistics unique to remote mountain construction. This project showcases our expertise as a trusted construction contractor serving the South Bay's diverse geographic regions, from Silicon Valley to the Santa Cruz Mountains.
